Jannat Alam Esha, a Diploma graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, began her journey into online entrepreneurship while still a student. Currently working as an instructor at a private polytechnic institute in Dhaka, she continues to run her online business alongside her professional career. Her dream is to grow this small venture into a large enterprise and create employment opportunities for many people. Bangladesh Diary, through Amit Hasan, listened to Esha’s story.
What is the story behind starting your small online business?
Esha: I come from a middle-class family, and during my student life it was not possible to meet all my needs. I used to think about how I could earn alongside my studies. I knew how to make some handmade products, but I did not know how to sell them without a physical shop. With encouragement from people around me, I decided to start an online business. At first it seemed difficult, but gradually it became easier.
What types of products did you start with?
Esha: I initially started by selling women’s clothing and hijabs, which I still sell. Later, after learning on my own, I started making bangles, and this has now become one of my regular products.
How do you remember your first order?
Esha: The feeling of receiving my first order was very joyful. I worked all night to complete it. The moment I received my first payment is still memorable for me.
Did you face any special challenges as a woman entrepreneur?
Esha: I haven’t faced major challenges simply for being a woman. The main focus for me has always been improving my skills, and I make it a point to work on them consistently.
How do you manage both your profession and business?
Esha: There are struggles and sacrifices. I try to make the best use of my time.
What do you prioritize most in your business?
Esha: I give the highest importance to product quality and customer demand.
What is your future dream?
Esha: I want my small business to grow into a large one and create employment opportunities for many people.
What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs?
Esha: One must have patience, faith, and a strong willingness to work hard.
